What is the difference between Stainless Steel Grade 316/316L and 904L

What is the difference between Stainless Steel Grade 316/316L and 904L

SS Grade 904L Vs SS Grade 316/316L:

Stainless steel grade 316 is an austenitic grade and the second most important grade of stainless after grade 304. It contains the addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance. It is usually regarded as “marine grade” stainless steel because of its excellent corrosion resistance.

Stainless Steel grade 904L is super austenitic steel that is designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance. Grade 904L contains a combination of alloys 4.5% molybdenum and 25% nickel that provides good corrosion resistance superior to 316L.

Both Stainless Steel 316L and Stainless Steel 904L are low-carbon austenitic steels. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number(PREN) value of 904L is 36.7 and the PREN value of 316L is 26.1. Therefore, it is a clear victory of grade 904L over 316L to withstand the corrosive power of seawater.

Grade SS 316/316L is the most widely used grade and readily available, to compare the price of these two grades for products like Buttweld Fittings, Forged Fittings, Investment Casting Fittings, and Flanges then 316L cost is less than SS grade 904L.

316L VS 904L Steel Composition:

Grade C Mn Si P S Cr Mo  Ni Cu
316L 0.03 2.0 0.75 0.045 0.030 16.0-18.0 2.00-3.00 10.0-14.0 /
904L 0.02 2.0 1.00 0.035 0.035 19.0-23.0 4.0-5.0 23.0-28.0 1.0-2.0

Grade 316, 316Ti, and 904L Available Forms:

  1. SS 904L Buttweld Fittings
  2. SS 904L Flanges
  3. SS 904L Threaded Fittings
  4. SS 904L Socket Weld Fittings
  5. SS 316 IC Fittings
  6. SS 316Ti Buttweld Fittings
  7. SS 316Ti Flanges
  8. SS 316Ti Threaded Fittings
  9. SS 316Ti Socket Weld Fittings
Pros

Both Stainless Steel 316L and Stainless Steel 904L are low-carbon austenitic steels. The Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number(PREN) value of 904L is 36.7 and the PREN value of 316L is 26.1. Therefore, it is a clear victory of grade 904L over 316L to withstand the corrosive power of seawater.
